Heian Period
The Heian Period was the period where art became popular in Japan. All clothing was decorated greatly, with colors found everywhere.
Kamakura Period
The Kamakura Period had long, elegant Kimonos. The Kimonos had very complex designs. Sewing machines like we have today were non existent, so the process of making the Kimonos were very long.
Muromachi Period
As time began to grow on, so did the designs of the clothing. Men's clothing were alot more simpler, but female clothing was a different story. The women's clothing were lighter weight, and even more brighter and colorful.
Azuchi-Momoyama Period
This is the period where the Samuari clothing is more elegant. These outfits are what we think of today when we hear about Japanese Samurai. These outfits are more protective now, and the colors are bright and beautiful.
Edo Period
The clothing of the Edo Period (1601-1867 A.D.) is what we today would think of when asked about traditional Japanese clothing, with the basic pieces such as the Kimono. Japanese clothing is as
simple as it is complex and elegant.
simple as it is complex and elegant.
Then and now, Japanese Society versus the world
Choosing which era was better practically, now, versus Medieval Japan... Japan now has let the westerns take over, so the Japanese wear now what we wear, and only wear a kimono on special occasions.
NowHeels are now popular, and crazy styles are introduced. Some shoes are covered in glitter, while others are bright, and some (like the shoes pictured above) are covered in spikes! Practical? I'm not sure...
Dresses now, are alot shorter and lighter. Dresses now come in a great range of colors and shapes. This is alot easier to put on and to wear around.

ThenSimple and what was called "style" back in Madieval Japan, these shoes are practical and were the Japanese "modern shoes" These shoes are alot easier to walk around in...
This dress was traditional and everyday wear back in the time of Medieval Japan. This dress is elegant, and were quite heavy... Walking around would be very tough...

The Verdict?
The Medieval Japanese have got it easy when it comes to clothing! Although their dresses were heavy, they did lighten up during the years. Although outfits today are lighter, heels have brought down the practicality. Now, as long as you look good, it doesn't matter if what you are wearing is practical or not.
